Retro Bone China Wall Lights
While it is recognised as the last word in quality for dinner services and tea cups, many people will be surprised to realise that beautiful bone china is also used for wall lights. However, the fact is that these lights are now being manufactured in Britain and have gained a fine reputation for their quality and durability.
At Angelo's Lighting in North London, we stock bone china wall lights among our huge range. These lights are a very popular choice for anyone who is looking for something different and unusual, either for themselves or as a special gift.

Advantages of Bone China Wall Lights
Wall lights have advantages over using just one central ceiling pendant, because they enable you to spread the light around the room and ensure there are no areas which are too dark. They can either be combined with a central light or used on their own, depending on the layout of the room. Attractive wall lights will attract attention themselves as pieces of decorative art, and bone china wall lighting fits the bill here perfectly. As design classics which will last for many years, these lights are a great choice for the long term.
Various different types of wall light are available, including those which will spotlight a particular area of the room, for instance focusing on a painting or an area where light is needed for working. We also have lights which emit a softer ambient glow, creating a warm atmosphere. It really all depends on your individual requirements, and we can advise you on choosing the best designs of lighting for your home or workplace, including bone china lights.
How Are Bone China Wall Lights Produced?
Bone china includes the ash of animal bones, just as its name suggests, and was originally developed in Britain in the 18th century. Irish artist and engraver Thomas Frye ran the Bow factory in East London, near to the local abattoirs, from where he was able to obtain bone ash to use in the manufacture of his porcelain. Later, the famous potter Joseph Spode improved the quality of bone china at his factory in Stoke-on-Trent. This area, known as the Potteries, became the centre where for many decades almost all the world's bone china was produced, from a mixture of china stone, china clay and bone ash.
This type of fine china has always been best-known for its use in producing quality cups and plates. However, various manufacturers over the years have offered high-quality bone china lamps and lighting, and china is still sometimes used on a small scale by individual artists and craftspeople to create unusual one-off lamps.
At our north London showroom, we at Angelo's stock a range of bone china wall lights made by Original BTC. This manufacturing firm was founded by designer Peter Bowles in 1990 and took over a factory in Stoke-on-Trent, drawing on the area's proud history of creating fine bone china. Its china shades are now created there and the lights are completed in Oxford, with simple lines inspired by traditional industrial design. Angelo's stocks these designs, which all include woven cotton flex as one of their quality features.
Different Styles of Bone China Wall Lights
The bone china lights which are included in our range at Angelo's would all look good with many different types of décor. This is because the style of these lights is simple and classic and so they are ideal to dress up or down. Perhaps your home or workplace has a minimalist look, with stark white or grey walls and a white or black carpet, combined with monochrome furniture and steel and glass. If so, then the simple modern lines of a classic light like Original BTC's domed Hector will be ideal to add to the look, either in white or in blue or green for a splash of colour.
Equally, however, if you have a more colourful and varied decor, then there will be a bone china light to give the perfect finishing touch. A plain white shade like the Coach Light, inspired by the lights on Indian railways, has a quirky look which will go well with vintage and retro interior design. The Circle Line wall light, a variant on the Hector with black circles round the dome, would look great with black and white wallpaper, or with more colourful walls.
Also, if you would like slightly softer lines, then the Hector Medium Pleat Wall Light could be the answer, with a gentle pleat which will echo the shapes and textures of your soft furnishings.
