What Is the History of Art Deco Lighting?
The Art Deco style began in France, and is often said to date from 1925, when a major international fair of decorative arts was held in Paris. Full of rich colours, this style featured geometric forms, inspired by the growth of the machine age. These patterns were combined with motifs ranging from ultra-modern skyscrapers and cars to natural images like flowers and shells.
The artistic style spread internationally during the 1920s and 30s and was popular right up to the outbreak of the Second World War. It was known as Style Moderne at the time, and only christened Art Deco in the 1960s. All kinds of household items and furniture, including lighting, bore the hallmarks of this design movement. Chrome and glass were among the materials used in the original Art Deco wall lights, some of which are still sold as collectors' items. For instance, pink shell wall lights with a chrome surround were one characteristic example.
Today, however, it isn't just antique collectors who are interested in owning Art Deco lighting. The style has now returned to popularity, with 1920s fashions currently enjoying a revival in the wake of Baz Luhrmann's film of 'The Great Gatsby'. There are many different Art Deco lights available to enhance your home, both replicas and new designs.
What Styles of Art Deco Wall Lights Are Available?
With thousands of Art Deco wall light designs in stock at Angelo's, there is bound to be something in our range which will suit your décor. Our website includes only a small selection of our full choice of lighting, so, if you are seeking a particular piece, get in touch with us or visit our showroom to discuss what you are looking for.
Our Art Deco range includes single-arm wall lights in glass and chrome, as well as wall lamps inspired by ancient Egyptian art, which combine heavy glass with solid brass fittings. We also stock double lights and other styles, including uplighters and torch lamps. You needn't restrict yourself to interior lighting with a 1920s flavour, either, as we also stock garden wall lighting.
Our Tiffany wall lights in the Art Deco style feature stained glass, and each of these beautiful pieces is handmade, meaning no two will look exactly alike. The Helensburgh wall light is in a striking triangular shape with a stained glass rose motif, while the Dark Star light is made in a fan shape and combines cream with dramatic black.
Reasons to Choose Art Deco Wall Lights
Why choose wall lighting for your room instead of, or in addition to, a central light? One attraction is that it provides a softer, diffused glow, and there is often a dimmer switch to turn the light up or down and get just the effect you want. Wall lights also light up corners which would otherwise stay dark, and can be used to focus light where needed, for instance to read a book or, in the kitchen, to prepare a meal.Art Deco wall lights are especially desirable because of their stylish qualities and, in the case of those including stained glass, the coloured light adds a special touch. This type of wall light would look especially great with antiques or reproduction furniture, helping to create a period atmosphere. However, these lights could also provide a talking point if you have mainly minimalist décor and want to add interest to your room. Bold lights look great when teamed with plain or pale walls, because they then stand out and make a statement.
